How the Bears won
- Jake Moody, promoted from the practice squad that afternoon to replace the injured Cairo Santos (quad), drilled a 38-yard field goal as time expired for the win in his Bears debut — less than eight hours after joining the active roster. [source]
- Moody, cut by San Francisco after Week 1 following a miss and a block, went 4-of-5 on the night (47, 48, 41 and 38 yards) with one attempt blocked by Daron Payne. [source]
- The game came one year after Washington's 'Fail Mary' Hail Mary beat Chicago on the same field; this time Caleb Williams took a knee to bleed the clock to three seconds before the kick, leaving no time for a reply. [source]
- Trailing 24-22 with 3:10 left, the Bears got the ball when Jayden Daniels botched a third-and-1 handoff and Nahshon Wright recovered at the Washington 44; D'Andre Swift carried five times for 34 yards on the winning drive, including a 15-yard toss to the 18. [source]
- Swift rushed for a then-season-high 108 yards on 19 carries and turned a short Williams pass into a 55-yard fourth-quarter touchdown. [source]
- Williams, playing near his hometown and Gonzaga College High School, went 17-of-29 for 252 yards and a touchdown (98.6 rating) with no turnovers, and scored himself on a quarterback sweep that built a 13-0 lead. [source]
- Jaquan Brisker picked off Daniels at the Bears' 2-yard line and returned it about 30 yards; the defense also recovered a Jacory Croskey-Merritt fumble and a Montez Sweat-forced fumble (T.J. Edwards) for three takeaways and three sacks. [source]
- Daniels threw three touchdown passes (to Chris Moore, Luke McCaffrey and Zach Ertz) and finished 19-of-26 for 211 yards, but Chicago held the NFL's top rushing offense to 124 yards. [source]
- Penalties hurt: a Theo Benedet formation flag wiped out an 11-yard Odunze touchdown, Brisker's roughing call extended a Washington scoring drive, and a facemask on Wright handed over an automatic first down. [source]
- The win was Chicago's third straight and its second one-point road comeback in a row after the Raiders game; the Bears moved to 3-2. [source]
The chant after this one
Every win ends the same way: Johnson gathers the room, calls for quiet, and leads the four lines one at a time with the whole team answering. This was chant No. 4 of the Johnson era.
- Johnson handed game balls to D'Andre Swift and Jake Moody before addressing the team. [source]
- Johnson told the room 'Whatever it took, we found a way... that game was up and down, but we never blinked,' shouted 'That's three in a row!' and demanded a little bit more before leading 'Good. Better. Best!' [source]
- The Bears' official X account posted the locker-room clip early Oct. 14 with the caption 'Never blinked.' — the same title used on the team's YouTube speech clip. [source]
- Moody, who had been jobless weeks earlier, said simply that he was glad he could come through for the team; Cole Kmet said learning to finish close road games was 'really good for the culture of the team.' [source]
