How the Bears won
- Caleb Williams played two series and went 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown (130.1 passer rating). His opening drive covered 92 yards in seven plays and ended with a 36-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Olamide Zaccheaus. [source]
- Ben Johnson pulled the starters after Williams' second series; Buffalo sat its starters entirely and never picked up a first down against Chicago's first-team defense. [source]
- Backup Tyson Bagent took over in the second quarter and threw an 11-yard touchdown to Tyler Scott; the Bears' own highlight package billed it as a 205-yard passing game for Bagent. [source]
- Running back Ian Wheeler scored twice, on a 1-yard run that capped a 12-play drive for a 28-0 halftime lead and a 10-yard run that finished a 14-play, 86-yard fourth-quarter march for the final margin. [source]
- Cairo Santos added a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter to make it 31-0. [source]
- Buffalo cycled through Mike White, Mitchell Trubisky and Shane Buechele at quarterback; White and Trubisky combined to complete 11 of 24 passes for 110 yards, and Buffalo missed a 56-yard field goal and turned the ball over on downs. [source]
- Rookie wideout Luther Burden III caught three passes for 49 yards, including a 22-yarder, and Zaccheaus' lone target went for the 36-yard score. [source]
- Rookie pass rusher Austin Booker recorded his fourth sack of the preseason to stall a Bills drive. [source]
- Cornerback Terell Smith suffered a knee injury, was carted off and ruled out; the shutout left the Bears 1-0-1 in the preseason and Buffalo 0-2. [source]
The chant after this one
Every win ends the same way: Johnson gathers the room, calls for quiet, and leads the four lines one at a time with the whole team answering. This was chant No. 1 of the Johnson era and the first of the 2025 season.
- This was the first time Johnson gathered the Bears in the locker room and led 'Good, better, best' — a saying he carried from his high school program at A.C. Reynolds in Asheville, N.C., where it was the post-win rallying cry. [source]
- Per The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain, Kevin Byard recalled that when Johnson first did it after the Bills game, players were confused and looked around unsure what to do when told to repeat the lines back. [source]
- Byard later admitted the saying struck him as a little corny at first ('I won't say it was corny, but it was... I don't really know'), and pinned the debut on the preseason Bills game. [source]
- Johnson acknowledged some players 'looked at me like I was crazy the first time or two,' especially those who hadn't played in the preseason game; Cole Kmet summed it up as 'those things are cheesy until they're not.' [source]
- The Bears did not release footage of the chant from this game; the first public look came after the Week 3 win over Dallas. [source]
